BAE Systems Chief Scientist II in Reston, Virginia

The Sensor Processing and Exploitation (SPX) product line is searching for a Chief Engineer to provide technical leadership for our portfolio of Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and Space Domain Hardware Experimentation programs. Work location can be in Reston, VA, Arlington, VA, or Merrimack, NH.

Responsibilities Include:

Principal Investigator and Technical Lead on critical R&D programs. Lead technical teams on R&D programs that typically include 10 engineers and scientists. Ensure successful execution of technical objectives for these R&D efforts in close collaboration with Program Management. This role includes direct customer engagement to shape the R&D efforts, ensure alignment to customer objectives, and to ensure customers are briefed on technical progress and status.

Serve as an independent technical reviewer of critical R&D programs. Reviews include assessment of scientific and technical merit of the technical approach as well as assessment of plans for technical execution including research, design, analysis, modeling and simulation, implementation, integration and test plans.

Lead technical marketing efforts and provide technical leadership for new business capture activities. This includes direct engagement with DoD and IC R&D customers to shape and create new business opportunities. This includes formulation of technical concepts and marketing of those concepts to our R&D customer, leading technical teams on proposal efforts and writing technical proposals.

Influence technology strategy for the SPX business. Work closely with each Directorate within SPX to shape our technology thrusts based on DoD and IC Science and Technology priorities and BAE Systems capability needs. This includes influencing R&D investment decisions. Proactively engage with BAE Systems Business Areas to facilitate transition of technology to BAE Systems products. Build relationships with Business Area technical and management staff to facilitate technology transition and collaboration.

Provide mentoring to the technical staff in the organization to ensure we are developing our next generation of technical leaders.

Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor's Degree and 15 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills And Education

  • 20 years of technical leadership experience in Research and Development for the Defense and Intelligence markets.

  • Advanced degree in physics, electrical engineering, or signal processing.

  • Experience providing technical leadership for new business capture and leading large teams.

  • Domain expertise in one or more of the following areas: Position, Navigation, and Timing, Space Payloads and Platforms, Ground-stations and Processing, Electronic Warfare, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Military Communications.

  • Active US Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance
