Transdev Transportation Specialist in Detroit, Michigan

The Transportation Specialist is responsible for monitoring all streetcar traffic along the alignment and is responsible for a variety of reporting duties related to situations that may impact passenger service and the functionality of platforms.Dispatches day-to-day Streetcar vehicle operations for M 1 Rail Detroit Streetcar by initiating and responding to radio calls to and from Streetcar operators, Supervisors, Managers and Maintenance personnel.
Schedules and dispatches streetcar operators
Monitors and controls traffic flow to accomplish on time headways
Monitor platform screens and follow reporting protocols
Assist with flagging streetcars
Accurately records and maintains events and activities in appropriated systems.
Notifies appropriate upper level managerial personnel regarding operational problems
Follows all safety policies and procedures and reports health and safety concerns in a timely manner
Performs multiple tasks simultaneously, takes appropriate action when presented with a stressful (life/death) situation and remains calm under all circumstances.
Answers multiple telephone lines, handles all emergency calls within the M 1 rail Detroit Streetcar, contacts or transfers calls to appropriate agencies, handles other calls appropriately and updates call lists.
Communicates effectively and coherently over M 1 Rail Detroit Streetcar, law enforcement and police radio channels and telephones, initiates and responds to calls, initiates notifications for collisions or other emergency occurrences, notifies others as requested, such as other City of Detroit Departments, wreckers, cabs and utilities, when services are requested/required.
May be required to contact various utility companies to resolve or report problems, such as gas detection, power failures, tree falling, and may be required to make emergency contact with law enforcement for callers in distress.
Initiates collision reporting and provides information for accident investigations when required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED.
No more than three (3) moving violations in the past three (3) years
- At least one year of related work experience in dispatch or customer service required; preferably in a transit, transportation or logistics environment.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of work execution within general area of assignment
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions and procedure
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff
Thorough knowledge of the geography of the service area
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Computer skills or aptitude for acquiring computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs; know how to operate standard office equipment, two-way radios, fleet vehicles and other related shop equipment; familiarity with Maintenance Management Systems would be beneficial
Must be able to work amid constant interruptions, prioritize and deal with time pressured deadlines and can clearly communicate during such occasions
Must be autonomous, self-directed and possess the ability to handle crisis and conflict situations
- Must submit and successfully pass drug testing, criminal background check and verification of previous employment
Must be able to pass periodical random drug/alcohol screens as this is a safety sensitive position
Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules, including weekends as needed
This position requires the wearing of a uniform
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of conditions (e.g. weather, rain, dust, noise, heat, cold, etc.)
Job requires sitting, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling and walking throughout the shift
Must handle parts and equipment ranging from 10 to 50 lbs.
