Job Summary

The AECOM Crystal City, VA office is looking for a Public Affairs Specialist servicing our Federal client with media affairs, communication, community/stakeholder relations, outreach, website and social media support. This position is located at a client's site, also in Arlington, VA.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing, writing, producing, and distributing communications materials

  • website content, press releases, public affairs guidance documents, stand-by statements, news alerts, media briefings to executives, targeted emails to editors/reporters, FAQs, social media content, outreach strategies, blog posts, bylined articles, op-eds, talking points, executive remarks/speeches and video scripts.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders on complex environmental and energy issues in areas that include public affairs

  • Event coordination

  • Meeting facilitation

  • Related communications needs

  • Media monitoring and notification of internal stakeholders of time-sensitive issues

  • Coverage on various pressing environmental and energy issues

  • Serve as primary point of contract for two large award programs

  • Interfacing with DoD Commands and leadership worldwide

  • Working with regional commands to identify potential nominees and solicit applications

  • Coordinate an annual video teleconference with DoD leadership and award winners

  • Build strong relationships with local elected officials and stakeholders, and help to develop and implement proactive media campaigns

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates degree

  • 4+ years of Public Affairs / Public Relations / Communications experience

  • Active US Government Secret security clearance is required

  • Ability to coordinate multiple awards programs, including ordering plaques, writing presentation scripts, recruiting award presenters, interoffice coordination, and other announcements or publications, as appropriate

  • Experience managing social networking tools (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram,) interpreting analytics and responding to posts

  • Knowledge of social media space and the ability to develop multi-media materials with an active, professional social media profile and engagement track record

  • Associated Press (AP) Style Guide writing experience (press releases, in-depth articles, etc.,) ideally on complex scientific/environmental/technical topics

  • Ability to work with subject matter experts and transform complex issues and technical information into clear, comprehensible messages for public and media consumption

  • Knowledge of website development/maintenance using Word Press

  • Experience using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro for outreach brochures, posters, logos, exhibits, factsheets, etc.

  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)

  • Demonstrate ability to meet critical and urgent deadlines

  • Must be outgoing and assertive, self-directed and detail oriented, able to multi-task and work in teams or independently, and possess strong time-management skills in order to multitask several pressing projects simultaneously

  • Must be a motivated, hard-working team player with ability to work quickly and effectively while maintaining great flexibility and accuracy

  • Must be able to work independently without direct supervision

  • Must be able to lift exhibit cases/containers and outreach supplies (up to 40 lbs.) 10-20 times per year for outreach support.

  • Must have a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or English

  • Experience in strategic communications planning and development, including print and digital content

  • Awards/recognition program management experience

  • Knowledge of federal government

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

  • Event planning/logistics experience

  • Knowledge of video and image editing software
